Course Description:

In the woods there are no hallways or doors to orient yourself by, and a unit often has to communicate without a word. Small Unit Tactics Basic is the foundation that our entire series of small unit field training is built on.

Small Unit Tactics Basic (SUTB) is a two-day course in the movement, communication and cooperation of a small military unit in open and wooded terrain. After the basic theory come camouflage and preparing your gear for action, non-verbal communication using hand signals and basic land navigation. Then you will learn fire team and squad patrol procedures, reacting to contact and an enemy attack, counter-tracking measures, link-up and actions at the Objective Rally Point. You will try all of this in many scenarios.

You train with airsoft weapons, which have a longer range than FX Simunition and are better suited to the field. You can pre-order our M4 training rifle for a symbolic fee, and your own airsoft weapon is welcome. You don't have to buy any tactical gear.

We never have more than 8 students per instructor, so everyone gets real attention. Over 300 students have completed this course.

Who Is This Course For:

For anyone who wants to learn the basics of small unit tactics in the field, whether you are preparing for service or are simply interested in military tactics. The course has no prerequisites and you don't need a live weapon. SUT Basic is required for all follow-up courses in the SUT series.

What You Will Learn:

After two days you can camouflage yourself and prepare your gear for action. You can communicate with your unit using hand signals and navigate in the field. You know how fire team and squad patrols move and how to react to contact and an enemy attack. You know the basic counter-tracking measures, how a unit links up and what it does at the Objective Rally Point.

Contents:

Basic theory, camouflage, preparing gear for action, non-verbal communication (hand signals), basic land navigation, fire team and squad patrol procedures, reacting to contact and enemy attack, counter-tracking measures, link-up and actions at the Objective Rally Point, many scenarios.

Required Equipment:

Comfortable civilian or tactical clothing and solid outdoor or sports shoes (both suited to the current weather and outdoor temperatures), a belt, or a plate carrier or any full ballistic protection including a helmet, AR15 magazine pouches, shooting glasses, knee pads, tactical gloves and headwear. Above all, come to the course in clothing and gear that match your everyday carry or work as closely as possible, without having to buy any tactical gear. It is not required on this course. Since you will be moving through the woods with an emphasis on camouflage and blending in, match the color of your clothing and gear to the forest and open terrain as closely as possible (green, MultiCam or other woodland camouflage).

If you would like to try modern ballistic gear, click on your chosen course date and you can rent one of the plate carriers on offer, including ballistic plates, or a top-of-the-line Galvion ballistic helmet.

Weapon:

At this course we use airsoft weapons, which have a significantly longer range than the FX Simunition weapons we normally use. Participants can use our M4 airsoft training rifles, which can be pre-ordered for a symbolic fee that usually covers only servicing and maintenance of the weapon after the course. The weapon is not included in the course fee! If you have your own airsoft weapon or sling, we recommend bringing them along. You are of course welcome to use them.

Tactical Courses and the Law:

Czech law does not regulate participation in tactical courses in any way. You don't need any permit, and it doesn't matter whether you are a citizen of the Czech Republic, another EU country or a country outside the EU. Czech law sets no fixed minimum age, but a minor participant must be reasonably mature, both mentally and physically. We do not recommend registering children under 15 for a course this intensive.

Timing:

Class starts at 9:00 am. Please arrive at the venue no later than 8:30–8:45 am. The course usually ends around 6:00 pm, with a 30-minute lunch break during the day.

We run our courses at various locations across the Czech Republic. You will find the exact venue for each date in the calendar, just click on the date. For multi-day courses that use more than one location, all venues are listed there.

Please check the venue carefully before booking. The same course often runs at different locations on different dates. Every now and then a student books a date expecting it to be at our home base, the Oleško shooting range, only to find out on the day that the course is taking place in Moravia, some 300 km away. To avoid this, always click on the date before booking and check where that particular date takes place.

Language:

Czech with English translation available.

Accommodation and Food:

Accommodation is not included in the course fee, each participant arranges and pays for it themselves. There is a 30-minute lunch break, so bring food that doesn't need cooking or ordering, such as an Adventure Menu type ration, an MRE or food from home, and enough to drink for the whole day.

Where to Go Next:

After SUT Basic, most students continue with Small Unit Tactics Ambush, where you learn to plan and execute an ambush. It is followed by Small Unit Tactics Raid, where the unit observes a static enemy and raids it. If you have also completed Dynamic Pistol 1, Dynamic Rifle 1 and Dynamic Rifle 2, you can test pair cooperation and reacting to contact with live weapons at Small Unit Tactics Live Fire. And at Tactical Tracker you will learn to recognize human tracks, determine their age and track the enemy in the field as a team.
